About the book

Help us celebrate the 80th anniversary of Goodenough College with this beautiful new publication

The World in a London Square will be a highly illustrated and beautifully produced evocation of life and times in Mecklenburgh Square over eight decades. Vivid reminiscences from every generation of residents will be woven through a sparklingly entertaining narrative. It will include excerpts from a history prepared by the College’s late and much-loved Librarian, Val Martin, and contributions from long-lived Canadian Walter Bilbrough, one of the first residents of London House in 1931 and equally able to report on progress in 1997.

Through them readers will encounter the remarkable personalities who created the College and steered it through precarious times in peace and war. The book will cover the entire spectrum of College life – cultural, intellectual, sporting and social activities – showing how from the earliest days all combined to create the genuine sense of community and companionship which remains central to the Goodenough spirit and ethos. Today, this is reflected in over 40 social clubs and societies and a continuous programme of cultural events, talks, social events and dinners. The College’s Scottish home The Burn, beloved of alumni and friends, will also feature in the book.

Current College members will want this book as a souvenir of their time here. Alumni of every era will want to revisit their experiences and discover how their College is meeting the challenges of a new century.

With over 200 illustrations in colour and black and white, this will be a volume to treasure.
